ROBOTICS SESSION P6 AND P7

Pat from Sentinus came to school this morning to share a robotics session with children in P6 and P7. The children had to programme robotic cars to travel up a race track to the finish line, making sure the distances and turns were correct. They all had a lot of fun programming and testing their robots and making adjustments to keep the robots on the track.

VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS CONCERT

As you all know 2020 has been a very different year for all of us. This has been especially noticeable in school, in the run up to Christmas. However we have tried to make our children’s Christmas experience as normal as possible with parties, films treats etc.

We are delighted that we were able to have a VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS CONCERT in our class bubbles. Thank you to all the teachers for making this possible. A special thanks to Mrs Calderwood for her work in music lessons over the past month preparing the music for the concert.

Also a big thank you to Mrs Henry for filming the class performances and then putting it all together in this video. We hope you enjoy it.

Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress

If your child didn’t get a Reading Eggs or Reading Eggspress certificate in assembly, this might be something they could do over the Christmas holidays. If you have forgotten the log in information please contact your class teacher.

Certificates are awarded slightly differently in each programme.

At the end of each map on Reading Eggs, the students will have to complete a quiz. In order to pass the quiz and progress on to the next map, they will need to gain 11 out of 15 correct answers.

They will then receive a certificate dependant on their result, as outlined below:

  • Gold Certificate - 14+ out of 15 correct answers

  • Silver Certificate - 12 to 13 out of 15 correct answers

  • Bronze Certificate - 11 out of 15 correct answers

Pupils can earn multiple certificates a week, depending on how many end of map quizzes they complete.

Reading Eggspress works slightly differently, as their certificates are based on how many Eggs earned, not correct answers in the quizzes.

  • 1000 Eggs per week - 1 Bronze Medal

  • Once the have 5 Bronze Medals - they'll achieve 1 Silver Medallion

  • Once they have 3 Silver Medallions - they'll achieve 1 Gold Trophy

Please note: Within Reading Eggspress, students will have a quiz after every lesson and will need to receive 80% to move on to the following lesson. If a student mentions that they are stuck on a level, this is usually why.

Reading Eggspress pupils can only earn one certificate per week.

VERY IMPORTANT VISITOR

On Monday we had a very important Christmas visitor - Santa. He came around to the door of each classroom and handed in a bag of presents for the children. Not quite the same as other years but then 2020 has been an exception to the rule.

Being social online this December: a parent's guide

Access to new tech over the winter period can provide new opportunities for children and young people but also present risks.

This guide for parents, from ThinkUKnow, looks at how they can support their child to be safer online this season by focusing on 3 key areas: viewing, sharing, chatting and friending.

IT'S BEHIND YOU!

P4/5 were involved in creating the crowd performance background noises for SRC’s panto, Beauty and the Beast. They submitted their part of the script two weeks ago which was then used in SRC’s live, online performance on 10th December. P4/5 really enjoyed watching the pantomime and hearing themselves. Great fun was had by all!

ACTION MENTAL HEALTH

Leah from Action Mental Health also did a very interesting and beneficial ‘Healthy Me’ workshop with P4 and P5. They learned about healthy bodies and minds and also about being kind to others.

HOW ARE YOU FEELING?

Leah from Action Mental Health came into school on Wednesday to talk to the children in P6 and P7 about their mental health and well-being.

Children learned how to ensure both a healthy body and mind by getting regular exercise, water and sleep. They also discussed how our thoughts and feelings can affect our behaviour and who we can talk to if we need help or want to talk to someone about how we feel.

Safeguarding Video

As we enter the Christmas season and you prepare for the school holidays , we are mindful that for some children and young people in NI, it may not be such a happy time.

This year – politicians across parties have come together to produce an awareness raising video (with signposting to helplines) that we have been encouraged to share.
